A source text and a target text analysis fixating on translation transformations that happened in two retranslations of Oscar Wilde's volume will shed light on the general translation strategies adopted by the two retranslators: Gerrit Komrij, De gelukkige prins en andere verhalen (1975) and Max Schuchart, Het sterrekind en andere sprookjes (1980). This thesis will focus on the Dutch retranslations of The Happy Prince and Other Tales, a collection of fairy tales written by Oscar Wilde in 1888.
Retranslation is a relevant subject in translation studies because the demand for a retranslation arises from certain dynamics in the output and input of a literary system. In the literary portion of this thesis, the phenomenon of retranslation will be defined and its motives explored with an emphasis on the influence of the first translator and the Retranslation hypothesis. Retranslation is the act of translating a document that has already been translated at least one time.
